Light tints and F1 rear lights

Smoked lights in a shade that darkens the lens without stopping the light doing its job.

Tinting lights is a balance. Go too dark and you have a car that fails an MOT, is harder to see at night, and is genuinely less safe. Go the right amount and the lenses lose their milky look and the whole back end of the car tightens up.

We work at a sensible shade, in even coats, with the units off the car where they need to be. The patchy, orange-peel finish you see on a lot of smoked lights comes from doing it in situ with a rattle can.

How it works

  1. 01

    Remove

Units off the car wherever the edge would otherwise show a mask line.

  2. 02

    Prep

Lenses cleaned, keyed and masked, so the coats have something to hold to.

  3. 03

    Tint

Built up in even passes rather than one heavy one, which is what causes patchiness.

  4. 04

    Refit

Sealed, refitted and function-checked before the car leaves.

  • Lens prepped and masked
  • Even coats, no patchiness
  • Finished smoked rear

Common questions

Is tinting headlights legal in the UK?

Lights still have to meet the requirements for colour and intensity, and an MOT tester will fail anything that reduces output too far. We keep tints light for exactly that reason. Heavily smoked lights are a common MOT failure.

What is an F1 rear light?

A high-intensity rear fog light mounted centrally, in the style used on Formula 1 cars. We fit it into the bumper or diffuser and wire it through a switched feed, so it works as a fog light rather than something on a permanent live.

Will it come off if I change my mind?

Film tints can be removed. Sprayed tints are on the lens for good, so it is worth being sure about the shade before we start. We will show you samples.

Can you tint just the indicators?

Yes, though indicators must still show amber. A light smoke keeps the lens dark while the bulb still reads correctly when lit.

Where we are

Light tints & F1 lights is carried out at our own unit on Stanley Road in Croydon, along with everything else we do - design, print, wrap, tint, lighting and finishing all happen under one roof, so nothing gets subbed out and nothing gets lost between two workshops. We are a few minutes from the A23 and East Croydon, and we take cars from across South London and Surrey.
